A Day In The Life: Tattoo Artist.

A Day In The Life...

Something I've decided to do in order to keep taking pictures, but ALSO, I wanted a way into the lives of people. REAL people. Doing REAL shit.

We've all got a life story and we all have things going on in it. My idea was to see people on the job, whatever it may be. They might be friends, but we know what they're like in a personal sense. What are people like when they're in a work place. What does that look like? Do they enjoy it? Are they much different from their every day, 'normal' selves? The interactions, down time, discussions, etc.

To get the ball rolling I thought I'd hit up a good friend of mine who is a tattoo artist. Man... Where does one begin? As a tattoo artist, the stakes are high. That shit's for life, unless you have the coin to have them removed, of course.

To my understanding that's as painful and just as expensive (if not more) to have done, so you'd better have a REALLY good idea of what you want, where you want it and be sure you want to go through with it. I mean, they're tattoo artists after all, not mind readers.

Although I had set out to take pictures, I got a little caught up listening to the conversations. People watching,  in those moments when they're having second thoughts. The last minute decisions and contemplations, wondering if they're comfortable with the choice they're making, and BANG - confirmation's in, and although they might not say it, their body language says "fuck it, lets go."

Let me just say, I was impressed with watching people get tattoos. Not only by the people having work done, but the tattoo artists themselves. The levels of concentration, and accuracy was phenomenal to watch. I was shooting in a relatively small space, and although I was their for myself, I did NOT want to bump, interrupt, or fuck up the flow of what was going on.

That has the potential to be seriously awkward, if I bumped the tattoo artist. I even felt the need to be quiet. You know how you're driving around trying to find an address, and you turn the radio down, trying to keep all distractions to a minimum? Yea, that was me. Of course, I was the only one that felt this way. Everyone else was cool with it. Conversations, laughter, music blasting.

Anyway, as the day wore on and everyone was finished getting their work done, it was time to head off for dinner and a couple of beers. Thinking about what I'd spent a number of hours around and looking at various photos I'd taken during the day, I thought to myself that this had to be one of the most interesting things I'd seen go down, as an occupation. I dont have any tattoos myself, which made it all the more interesting to me. Turns out the day was a great way of giving myself a heads up on what I'm in for if I decided to get a tattoo, or two... or three, lol. Yea, right!

A thank you to everyone who let me hang out and do my thing whilst you were doing yours. Super grateful for the opportunity, and look forward to maybe doing it all again soon.

This was a great way to start the series. There are others planned, which hopefully I'll get to share them with you as well. Keep an eye out for them.

Sydney Fringe Festival.

Towards the end of last week, and the weekend its self, I managed to take a few shots of a couple of events run as part of Sydney Fringe Festival. To say its been fun and interesting at the same time is an understatement.

Here's a few photos from an event put on by Tortuga Studios - In The Night Garden. It was vibrant, colourful and bursting with energy, but still had a laid back community feel to it. Put it this way... If you weren't there, you missed out.

I also had a chance to check out another event,  The History Of HipHop  which was another really cool event to go to. I've posted a few here and you can see a few others on my JDHQ Facebook page as well.

Street Photography Weekend...

I don't know about you, but I had a blast over the weekend. Nothing but good times. I went out and as per usual, the camera came with me. The weather was awesome, the vibes were positive and the company was good (If I saw you over the weekend, it was good to as always).

I took a fuck load of photos and thought I'd share just a few. I'll be adding more to my Flickr account eventually. Slowly but surely, I'll get around to it.

Sydney Morning Herald - Photos1440 Challenge.

As you may or may not know, I've recently started trying my hand at photography. I have no previous experience, or up until a matter of months ago, no real interest in it either. I'm really enjoying the challenge of learning something new and indeed creative. To cut a long story short, I'm hooked.

Me being the type of person I am, learning wasn't enough in its own right. I wanted to throw myself in the deep end, just to see what would happen. The Photos 1440 Challenge , an annual event run by the Sydney Morning Herald , was going to be my testing ground. So after registering as an entrant, I received the brief.

"We have created an assignment where we want you to really think about one of the fundamental elements of photography.... LIGHT."

The topic was entirely up to you, as to what you wanted your photo essay to be about, and it required between 4 - 7 photos. The topic I chose to do my essay on was:

Surveillance - The Urban Inner City Environment.

Although this is the photo I like the least, I felt the need to use it, and for it to be the first in my essay. I needed it to set the tone and make it clear as to what direction I was going with it. Cameras are everywhere nowadays, and we're forever being reminded that WE are being watched around the clock, whether we like it or not.

This is probably one of my favorite photos to date. It also brings me to my next point. You don't even have to be doing anything wrong in order to be seen. People in everyday life, doing everyday things and going about their business are being watched. I thought the first two photos summed up a lot of things about today's society, in my opinion.

Yet again, more reminders. Most of my photos were taken while the rest of the city was fast asleep. I really like the peacefulness of being out and about late at night. Ridiculously late at night!

In being out so late, I found a humorous side to what I was doing. The more I was out and the longer I was shooting, You would see randomness you couldn't help but laugh at, which in turn, would lead me to take a shot of things I felt needed to be shared. Although we're watched over in great detail, there's still pots of gold without the corny rainbow to be seen and immortalized with a photo.

Bless you SOFA, your timing's impeccable.

Nothing is immune from having a watchful eye of some sort. Buildings, playgrounds, schools, train stations and other various structures, all announcing the fact that "Big Brother" is watching you 24 hours a day.

The amount of damage to the things that were "under surveillance", was actually quite ridiculous, and funny (well, to me it is) that these things can happen under the nose of someone charged with a duty to watch over said building or structure. Go figure.

This was also another one of my personal favorites. It was about 4:30 - 5am. It was cold, raining and ridiculously foggy, but I just enjoyed being out.

Most of the shots I took are within walking distance of my house. I thought I had more than enough around me to get my point across and also make an interesting photo essay. I never felt the need to go and find the corny sunrise / sunset, or obligatory beach shots, smiling people, or public events.

I wanted the gritty look and feel to what I was doing. I wanted to take photos of things that resonated with me, from a point of view that I find interesting. If I was trying to sell you a "Sydney Is Awesome, Please Visit" kind of approach, I would've taken shots of things in accordance with that.

But that's just not me, nor is it my style.

All in all, I enjoyed the experience of photojournalism. For me personally, I found it a great way to learn and also push myself. I've got a lot to work on and look forward to entering any other competitions that are out there as a way to hone my skills, including Photos1440 challenge next year.

Until then, I have other photos of my own you can check out on Flickr.

Well done to everyone who entered. If you were an entrant, that just so happens to read this, feel free to leave a link for me to look at your work. Always interested to see what others had done.

Be sure to check out the winners gallery here.

Kit Complete - Some Beats My Friends Like.

After being years in the making, the first up solo release from Sydney producer & beat extraordinaire/MC Kit Complete (Reverse Polarities) dropped a beat tape entitled 'Some Beats My Friends Like' as a free download from Kit Completes Bandcamp page.

If you can picture yourself on a rooftop with a beer in your hand, overlooking the city landscape thinking about the past & present while plotting the movements of your future, you have the sounds of Kit Completes beat tape. He's on some down tempo shit with punch. It's got a little bit of everything but the thing i noticed the most are the drums. The shit KNOCKS on most of the tracks. The stand out tracks for me personally are 'Truffle Shuffle' and the track i found myself cutting to the most being 'Little Forest.'

All in all it's a fucking solid first up release in my opinion, so go cop that shit. It's free and it's dope! What more could you possibly want.

Kit Complete is definitely a name people should keep an eye on for the future, word up.
